Becoming a volunteer

Volunteering provides an enriching and invaluable experience

Volunteers are important to us. In addition to helping at the island early childhood centre we need help with the older ones doing their homework and teaching them English. There is prejudice in Thai society towards prospective Moken employees, but being able to read and speak English will give young Moken people an important advantage.

Volunteering provides an enriching and invaluable experience. Engaging with underprivileged children offers a unique opportunity to profoundly impact their lives, providing you with a fresh and enlightening perspective on life. These experiences are likely to create enduring memories that will stay with you for a lifetime.

While their culture may be fading, your involvement can play a pivotal role in ensuring these children are equipped with the best opportunities to seamlessly assimilate into Thai society while preserving their cultural identity.

When it comes to qualifications, our preference is for volunteers to hold a Working with Children Check or its equivalent, which can typically be obtained online, depending on your country of origin. Alternatively, a police certificate is acceptable. Additionally, prior experience in the educational field would be highly beneficial.

However, if you are only able to contribute your time and enthusiasm, that is perfectly acceptable too, as long as you are comfortable working under supervision.

Sponsoring a child

Supporting a Moken child through sponsorship represents a profoundly impactful way to make a direct and positive difference in their life. Your sponsorship funds are channelled directly to the child, or they are entrusted to those responsible for the child’s well-being.

Moreover, your sponsorship sends a powerful message to the Moken child. It conveys the heart-warming knowledge that there is someone, somewhere in the world, who genuinely cares about their well-being, future, and education. Your commitment to their betterment extends far beyond monetary support; it symbolizes a bond of compassion that transcends borders and fosters hope.

Note for Australian residents: Your donations and child sponsorships are channelled through our Australian sister organization mercycentreaustralia.org which is a registered Australian charity for which we will send you a tax-deductible receipt. All donations over $2.00 are tax-deductible in Australia.
