Home / Early Childhood Centre
Mercy operates a Early Childhood Centre on Koh Lao Island, where Moken children learn the Thai language and alphabet.
Many of the Early Childhood Centre children are stateless and some of the older children have never received any formal education as they spent their early years on the boat with their parents. Which is why the Early Childhood Centre serves as a critical bridge to integrate these children into the Thai Early Childhood Centre system.
But our mission must go beyond education.
A well-nourished mind is essential for learning and the children are provided with daily nutritious lunches, comprising of rice, meat, vegetables and fruit. Often, there is enough food left over for them to take home to their families, which for many represents the only meal they get that day. Additionally, they receive medical care and vitamin supplements as needed
Beyond its educational role, the centre serves other functions as well. It provides a haven for children during frequent storms, acts as a community centre for important village events and celebrations. It offers a platform for government provided medical care and vaccination programs and provides employment for stateless Moken staff members who have no other source of income. Finally, by their sheer presence, the centre also plays a pivotal role in monitoring and helping the villagers during times of poverty and illness that threaten the village.
